About Brian Walch
Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, I grew up having adventures. My path to starting Shiftfocus has been an adventure, too.
Before this, I spent 25 years helping Resource Data, a national GIS and software consulting firm, grow from about 20 employees at a single office to more than 200 employees across seven locations. I led large-scale technical projects, helped modernize government systems, and worked closely with public agencies and private clients to improve their operations. I also led recruiting and HR, developed internal systems and processes, led offices, and served on the board of directors.
Across every role and project, one thing became clear: it was always about the people.
Whether I was managing teams internally or collaborating with clients, I saw the same pattern: the manager made the difference. Strong managers brought out the best in their teams. Struggling managers slowed progress, eroded trust, and left talent underutilized.
Those experiences changed how I think about growth. It’s not about tools and timelines, or process and planning. It’s about people leading people. When managers are supported and developed, teams perform better, businesses run smoother, and work becomes more meaningful for everyone involved.
That’s why I started Shiftfocus. I wanted to help organizations succeed, not just with technical systems, but with their people systems. If an organization can do the people part well, the people will take care of the technical systems.
Today, I partner with organizations to build leadership capacity, strengthen management culture, and develop high-performing teams from the inside out. My work blends strategic consulting, leadership coaching, and practical tools grounded in real-world experience and guided by a methodology designed to scale what works.
I share insights regularly through my column in Alaska Business magazine, on LinkedIn, and as a speaker and podcast guest.
Whether you’re navigating growth, facing a transition, or working to strengthen leadership capacity, I’d welcome the opportunity to support your team.
Better managers. Better organizations. Better lives.
The challenges we face in our organizations and across society aren’t getting simpler. Solving them requires smart people working together and doing their best work.
Managers make that possible. They’re the leaders who unlock potential, facilitate collaboration, and turn effort into impact.
They build culture, create momentum, and provide clarity that moves organizations forward. And when work is better, life is too.
Great managers don’t just drive performance. They develop people.
I believe that when we invest in great managers, we don’t just build better organizations, we build a better world.
